How to raise your first $100.00

22 Mar

It’s time to get your fundraising efforts moving! Here are 5 ideas to help you raise your first $100 for The Longest Day.

  1. Post a link to your fundraising page on Facebook and tag 10 friends, asking them each to donate $10.00.
  1. Host a bake sale at your office, school, church or community center and put the proceeds toward your goal.
  1. Offer a “prize” for anyone who donates $100.00 or more … make them dinner, run their errands for a day, walk their dog …just to name a few.
  1. Host a barbecue or dinner and charge an entry donation to attend.
  1. Ask friends to pledge $10.00 for every mile you plan to walk/hike/ride/run, each song you plan to sing, every book you plan to read, etc.

These are just a few ideas to help you get started. Bet you can come up with a lot more!

The Longest Day: Start an anywhere team!

28 Feb

You can live anywhere and participate in The Longest Day. Join with friends and family across the country — or even the world — and form a team that is active from multiple locations. We have tools to help you with scheduling your day and staying connected, even if you can’t be face to face on June 21. Start your Anywhere Team now.

The Alzheimer’s Association recognizes that some teams/individuals may have conflicts or challenges with participating on the summer solstice, Wednesday, June 21. As a participant in The Longest Day, you can fundraise and honor those affected by Alzheimer’s in a way, and on a day, that works with your schedule. What will you do?

The Longest Day is a team event to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association®. Held annually on the summer solstice, the duration of this sunrise-to-sunset event symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with the disease and their caregivers. Teams are encouraged to create their own experience as they fundraise and participate in an activity they love to honor someone facing the disease.

Volunteer Spotlight: Joyce Tribble

27 Feb

Joyce Tribble walked into the Norfolk office one day in 2011 and asked if we ever needed volunteers in the office. Joyce’s husband, Sonny, had Alzheimer’s and had died a little more than a year before she came in. Joyce soon became a dependable weekly volunteer at the front desk, answering the phone, filing, putting together mailings, and performing other clerical duties with good humor and care. When she started volunteering with the Association, Joyce didn’t own any purple clothing or jewelry. Soon, however, she began adding pieces to her wardrobe, and whenever she volunteered she would wear one of her purple tops or some of her purple rings and bracelets. Joyce had worked as a bookkeeper for years, and she loved counting money, so she volunteered every year to help count money in the office after the largest Walk to End Alzheimer’s events. A member of the Sherry’s Strutters team for the Virginia Beach Walk for three years, Joyce actively participated in fundraising activities, including selling car raffle tickets, and she proudly wore the Walk t-shirts that she earned.

When Joyce was diagnosed with cancer in late 2015, she took a short break from volunteering, but she returned in 2016 and adjusted her volunteer schedule to accommodate her treatments. Sadly, Joyce became too ill to volunteer in November, and she died on December 21, 2016 at age 79. Joyce is greatly missed by all of us at the Southeastern Virginia chapter, and we will long remember the joy and love she brought to our office.

Kids can participate in The Longest Day too

7 Feb

Get the kids in your family involved in The Longest Day by helping them set up a lemonade stand. Provide them with a table, pitchers of lemonade, cups and napkins. Let them get creative by encouraging them to make their own signs to attract passersby to their stand. They can either set the price for a cup of lemonade or simply ask for donations. Maybe they can make up small bags of popcorn to sell along with the lemonade. They can set a price for just a cup of lemonade or for a combination of the drink with popcorn.

The kids can even encourage their neighborhood friends to set up their own lemonade stands and create a friendly competition among themselves. Whoever wins the competition by raising the most money might win a movie ticket, maybe gets to pick out their favorite ice cream at the store, or gets out of doing their least favorite household chore for a week. Parents, you may want to help with this part.

Warm weather is just around the corner, so start planning your lemonade stand fundraising activity today!

Cooking & Baking: Fundraising for The Longest Day

24 Jan

If you are someone who loves to cook or bake, use your talent to show your love for all those affected by Alzheimer’s on The Longest Day! Whether you’re participating as an individual, hosting a party/event or organizing a team, here are some ideas to use cooking and baking as an activity for The Longest Day. If you are honoring a person living with or lost to the disease, make your culinary efforts more meaningful by using one of their recipes. Thank you for raising funds and awareness for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ask your employer, place of worship, bank or other location if you can set up a table to sell baked goods. Include a general donation jar for those that would like to donate without buying anything. (Use our jar wrapper, found in your Participant Center).

Have a recipe or menu that everyone loves? Offer to teach people how to make it for a donation. Students get to eat or take their creations with them.

Collect recipes from friends, relatives and colleagues, or members of your place of worship, bowling team or another organization. You can also create a book of family favorites or specialties loved by the person you are honoring for The Longest Day.

Challenge your co-workers, family and friends to a cook-off or bake-off. Charge an entry fee for each item. Ask your judges to donate as well since they will get to sample the entries! Give the winners gift cards donated from local businesses.

Make your event more meaningful by selecting food or recipes loved by the person you’re honoring. Guests who attend can make a donation in exchange for a delicious meal! Ask friends and family to join you in the food preparation.

Spice up a traditional bake sale by auctioning off the fanciest or most popular items. Set a minimum bid and go up from there. The auction can be live or silent.
